Galia Villages is an intense, complex and elegant red wine made by the talented French wine maker Jérôme Bougnaud in collaboration with the house El Regajal in northern Spain. Galia Villages comes from almost century-old vines that grow on slopes at 800 - 1000 meters altitude on soils rich in chalk and limestone, located along the course of the Douro river just outside of the official boarder of the renowned wine region Ribera del Duero.

The deep purple coloured wine has a heavenly, aromatic bouquet of black cherries with hints of violets, cloves and mineral notes. The palate is full-bodied with flavours of bramble, vanilla and spices. It is a beautifully balanced wine with a fresh acidity and soft tannins. It is ready to be enjoyed now and can also be easily kept for at least 10 more years to develop the flavours and aromas even more. Enjoy it with game, roasted meat, stews, grilled vegetables and savoury sauces, preferably after an hour of decanting.

The oenologist Jérôme Bougnaud is renowned from his visionary work together with the Danish wine maker Peter Sisseck while creating the top-rated wines QS and Pingus. Galia is Jérôme Bougnaud own exciting project where he has purchased 50 small plots of old, overseen and unappreciated vineyards wish bush vines from the 1930s to the 1960s. The vines are of mostly Tempranillo grapes but also Garnacha and Albillo grapes and their trunks are so twisted and crocked they look like they have been taken directly out of a Tim Burton film. These are rare, ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines, which means they have not been grafted to American rootstock to counter phylloxera, the louse which destroyed so many of the world’s vines in the 19th century. These vineyards would probably have been erased and replaced by younger, high performing vines, if it wasn’t for Jérôme’s vision of creating two high quality wines, the wine Galia Villages and the single vineyard Galia Le Dean, with the power, elegance and personality of these special vines. The parcels, which are grown organically as well as with biodynamic methods, are scattered outside of the village Valladolid in sites like Piquera de San Esteban, Fuentelcésped, Hontangas, Cuevas de Provanco and Trigueros del Valle, just outside of the official boarder of the renowned wine region Ribera del Duero. This is also the reason why the wine is certified as “Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León” and not D.O. Ribera del Duero.
